This is an official U.S. Government document, produced by NIST (National Institute for Standards and Technology). It was placed in the Federal Register on 1998-07-28. Click on the NIST logo to download it. Although it is only nine pages long and contains no illustrations, it is inexplicably 2.3 megabytes long. NIST/Metric Program Documents on Rules and Style
Conventions
NIST (National Institute for Standards and Technology) has three documents dealing with this subject. One is the 86-page NIST Special Publication 811, which provides a complete description. Download time is under 2 minutes at 50 kbit/s. The second is a four-page author checklist and the third (two pages) deals with typefaces for symbols in scientific manuscripts. ISO 8601 Standard for Date and Time Notation
The 1988 version of this standard was one of the very few no-charge documents available from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in Geneva, Switzerland. The size of the file is about 1 megabyte. The current version (ISO 8601:2004) is available in hard copy form or for downloading from the ISO web site for 126 Swiss Francs (as of 2006-05-22). Legal Units in Germany Germany's Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the equivalent of the United States' National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
