The Southern Illinoisan, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 22, 2001 Page 3B The Record IMeto J. Teruggi Leslie Annis ORIENT Leslie Annis, age 84, of Orient, died Aug. 20, 2001, at 1:35 p.m. at his residence. He was born June 26, 1917, in Cherry, to James and Edith (White) Annis.

He was married to Erlene (Johns) on June 15, 1941, in Metropolis and she survives. In June they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Also surviving is a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Joan Annis of Pinehurst, N.C. and a daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Michael White of West Frankfort and one granddaughter and her husband, Michelle and Chris Smalley of Fairview Heights. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Lucille Patterson and Ivy Mills and by three brothers, Ernest and Tom Annis and Fred Wliite.

Mr. Annis was a member of the Orient Church of Cluist. He was also a member of the American Legion of Orient, here in 1984 he served as commander. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America and had retired in 1982 as a coal miner from the Orient Mine no. 3 near Waltonville.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the United States Army. Funeral services for Mr. Annis will be held at 1 1 am. Thursday, Aug. 23, at the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort, with Minister Ed Pool and Pastor Joe Zbinden officiating.

Entombment will be in the Denning Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home. Military graveside rites will be conducted. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Southern Illinois or to the Orient Church of Christ and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Geraldine Hicks GOLCONDA Geraldine Hicks, 73, of Golconda, died at 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20, 2001 in Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis. Services will be at 1 p.m.

Straub on March 15, 1940, in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Survivors include her children, Carl Straub of Centerville, Va and grandchildren, Cara, Gilby, Cherly Straub; five greatgrandchildren; and two brothers, Lowell Mitchell of Christopher and Amos Mitchell of Sesser. One son, Kevin Straub, three sisters, Wilma Uttly, Neva Furlow and Agnes Mitchell, and two brothers, Cecil Mitchell and Charles Mitchell, preceded her in death. Services will be at 11 am. DEATHS Velma Wright Manion DU QUOIN Velma Wright Manion, 87, of Du Quoin, passed away at 7:45 am. Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at the home of her daughter in Du Quoin. Velma was a retired seamstress at Forrest City Garment Company. She had also been a cook at the Maid Rite, Fair Acres Nursing Home and Fair View Nursing Center.

She was a member of the Old Du Quoin Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Du Quoin Community Club, Royal Neighbors, VFW Auxiliary, Perry County Gold Plate, Du Quoin Eastern Star and the Rebekah Lodge. She was bom Jan. 17, 1914, at Du Quoin, the daughter of James R. and Lula Belle (Lemons) Coffel.

She first married Milton E. Wright on April 2, 1937, Old Jackson, Mo. He preceded her in death on July 1, 1971. She then married Ed Manion on Dec. 8, 1978, at Du Quoin.

He also preceded her in death on March 15, 1979. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jimmie Dale and Helen Wright of Orion; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mona and Robert Holland of East Moline and Millie and John Little of Du Quoin; seven sisters, Mable Ruth Crispin of Henderson, Etta Jane Beach of Fort Wayne, Lona Faye Dunnigan of Tuscola, Leota Berry of Madison, Mammie Lee of Florida, Lois Bird of Front Royal, Va, Nina Belle Woolsey of Du Quoin; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandcluldren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, two infants, tliree brothers, Jesse Coffel, Carl Coffel and Marley Turner, two sisters, Bernice Hughes and Ida Mae Kinslow. Funeral services will be at 10 am. Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin, with the Rev.

Man gets 18 years for selling cocaine By Sara Bean sara.beansouthemillinoisan.com BENTON A Carbondale man was sentenced to 18 years in federal prison for his role in the distribution of more than 700 grams of crack cocaine in the Carbondale-area between 1995 and March 2000.

Tommie Dashawn "Doo Doo" Harris, 22, was sentenced Monday in federal court. In addition to the prison sentence, Harris also was fined $800. Harris previously had pleaded guilty to a three-count indictment charging lum with conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine and distribution of crack cocaine. In a live-year investigation, Harris and others were determined to have sold and distributed more than 700 grams, or about 1.4 pounds of crack cocaine. Much of the crack cocaine was obtained in Chicago and brought to Carbondale for distribution.

On March 16 and March 22, 2000, Harris sold amounts of crack cocaine to a confidential source working for authorities. The investigation was conducted by the FBI, Carbondale Police Department, Jackson County Sheriffs Department, pursuant to the their participation in the Carbondale-Murphysboro Violent Crime Initiative. The initiative is a cooperative effort of the Carbondale Police Department, Murphysboro Police Department, Jackson County Sheriffs Department, FBI, Illinois State Police, Southern Illinois Enforcement Group, Drug Enforcement Administration, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and the Southern Illinois University Police Department. Police arrest wrong way driver By Sara Bean sara.beansouthernillinoisan.com CARBONDALE A Canton man faces DUI charges after he was spotted early Tuesday morning driving the wrong way down a one-way street. Carbondale police arrested Wesley G.

Murphy, 24, of Canton, at about 1:39 am. Tuesday. Murphy was seen by a Carbondale police officer driving the wrong way in the 500 block of South Illinois Avenue. Murphy's vehicle was weaving in and out of traffic lanes, the officer reported. When the officer tried to stop Murphy, Murphy turned his vehicle into an alley.

He then took off running. He was captured after a short pursuit, police said, and he resisted arrest. Murphy was booked on charges of DUI, driving the wrong way on a on a one-way street and resisting a police officer. He refused to take a breath test. He posted $100 bail and was released.

POLICE MARION Marion police reported a truck vandalized and a car theft earlier this week. Police gave the following accounts: At about 11:40 p.m. Sunday, a 1995 Chrysler LeBaron was stolen from the front yard of a residence located in the 400 block of East Marion. Morgan. She preceded liim in death. He was a printer at Kegoff Printing for 50 years. He was a member of the St. Mary's Church, the Elks Club and VFW in Des Plaines.

He was a veteran of World War II. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Debra Teruggi of Barrington; grandchildren, Scott and Debbie Weber, Craig and Amy Weber, Michael Teruggi and Angela Teruggi; and seven great-grandcluldren. Roscoe McBride AJN.NA K. Roscoe McBride, age 87, of Anna, died at 6:06 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, at Union County Hospital in Anna He was born on Sept. 12, 1913, in Ava to Edward and Margaret (Arnold) McBride.

He was a member of the First Christian Church in Anna. He graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and taught school a few years before being drafted into the U. S. Army during World War II. He received the Bronze Star for his service in the European Theatre.

He was a member and Past Commander of the American Legion Post in Anna He was also a member of the Carroll P. Foster Post No. 3455, VFW in Anna He was a 61 -year member of Alma Masonic Lodge No. 497 of Steeleville. He retired as a laboratory technician from the Choate Mental Health Center in Anna.
