Over CHATHAM A clerk who al legedly went on a binge while his employer was at the beach was among three persons sent on to the grand jury on felouy charges yesterday in County Court Mallie Mitchell 51 of Dan ville was bound over on a charge of embezzling $98118 from his employer Harry Col lins operator of a fruit stand just east of Danville on Rt 58 Mitchell is accused of spend ing some $200 of mon ey for alcoholic beverages mo tel room and gifts for feminine companions while Collins was at the beach last Aug 15 19 Deputy Sheriff Barber testified he arrested Mitchell Danville and later found $700 in the refrigerator at the Keel ing home of one of the women Collins said he left Mitchell In charge of the fruit stand when he went to the beach At that time Mitchell had $400 in cash with which to operate plus the merchandise at the stand Collins added Collins said when he return ed four days later Mitchell and the money had disappeared and the freezer doors at his fruit stand were open Also 1922 died yesterday at an Alexandria hos ital after a long illness Mr Webb joined Chesapeake Ohio Railroad in 1903 and re tired in 1954 when he moved to Arlington He also operated a jewelry store in their arms South Boston Joins Regional Planning Body Corporation Court Making Progress On Civil Docket More Students or Extension Courses Needed SOUTH BOSTON City Coun cil has reversed a previous vote and agreed to join the South side Regional Planning Com mission Council's action came Mon day night after the governing body was informed that re gional planning would be a prime consideration in approv ing the application for federal grants for water and sewer lines in the annexed area of the city At its September meeting Council had voted against af filiation with the regional com mission which is also to be composed of the counties of Halifax Mecklenburg and Char lotte Each political subdivi sion is to appropriate funds for operation of the regional group on a per capita basis The negative vote apparent ly stemmed from the fact that the share of the com operating costs was unknown at that time City Manager Aubrey Hough ton told Council it now appears that the cost to the localities will not exceed three cents per capita during the early stages of the development of the com mission The Halifax and Mecklenburg boards of supervisors both have voted to participate in the re gional group and Charlotte County has deferred action pending further study of the costs involved In other business Council voted to petition the State High way Department for a partial relocation of Rt 501 in the city that would include a new four lane bridge over Dan River to replace the present narrow structure and a new street from the river to irst St or Logan St Of the total estimated cost of $987000 the city would be re quired to pay 15 pos sibly as much as $100000 for improvements made inside the city Houghton said It was emphasized that the Highway Department would bear the of Main St for an entry in the open classification Board Studies Henry County Salary Requests MARTINSVILLE The Hen ry County Board of Supervisors will continue next Tuesday night the consideration of salary 1 requests for constitutional offi cers and their employes pre sented for study last night The figures were readied in pairs for the first six months of 1967 and for the 12 months from July 1 1967 to June 31 1968 in order for the county to make the required change in its fiscal year to conform with the state Commissioner of Revenue Philpott sought no increase in his own salary but asked
