The course introduces the main stages of the creation of scholarly Digital Editions in the field of history. The main teaching task is shaping the complex understanding of how historical resources can be transferred in the format of the scholarly digital edition for further use by scholars, educators, etc. The logic of the course is in moving from the basic things to a complex understanding of what is a digital edition as a part of the research infrastructure. The students will learn the necessary stages of creation of the digital edition, and which technologies and tools are in use in this process. The students will master text processing such as text recognition and marking up based on the contemporary standard for the creation of digital editions. Also covered in the course is the AI-driven tool for text recognition Transcribus and the TEI-XML markup language, which enable scholars to store, analyze, and share humanities textual information. TEI-XML is also used as a globally recognised standard for the creation of scholarly digital editions to ensure accountability and re-usability of resources.
[b]Exam outline:[/b]
During the course, you will accomplish a series of tasks which are logically connected. You will be working on one of the case studies suggested by the teacher. The case studies include a number of pages of the textual historical resource to be converted step-by-step into the Digital Edition. To pass the course you will need to accomplish the home tasks (40% of the mark), organise all the information in a concise format and present it as a poster together with a written assignment (60%).

The course tasks are adjusted to the different levels of IT skills of the participants. Students without specific knowledge are welcomed as well for enrollment.
The accomplished Digital Edition can serve as a good contribution to your professional portfolio.

Der Kurs führt in die wichtigsten Phasen der Erstellung wissenschaftlicher Digitaler Editionen im Bereich der Geschichte ein. Das Kernziel des Kurses besteht darin, ein komplexes Verständnis dafür zu entwickeln, wie historische Ressourcen in das Format einer wissenschaftlichen digitalen Edition übertragen werden können, damit sie von Wissenschaftlern, Pädagoginnen usw. weiter genutzt werden können. Der Kurs führt beginnend bei den Grundlagen zu einem komplexen Verständnis dessen, was eine digitale Edition als Teil der Forschungsinfrastruktur ist. Die Studierenden lernen die notwendigen Schritte zur Erstellung einer digitalen Ausgabe kennen und erfahren, welche Technologien und Werkzeuge dabei zum Einsatz kommen. Die Studierenden werden Verarbeitung von Texten wie Texterkennung und -auszeichnung auf der Grundlage der aktuellen Standards für die Erstellung digitaler Editionen beherrschen können. Der Kurs behandelt auch das KI-gestützte Texterkennungswerkzeug Transcribus und die Auszeichnungssprache TEI-XML, die es Wissenschaftlern ermöglicht, geisteswissenschaftliche Textinformationen zu speichern, zu analysieren und auszutauschen. TEI-XML wird auch als weltweit anerkannter Standard für die Erstellung wissenschaftlicher digitaler Editionen verwendet, um die Nachvollziehbarkeit und Wiederverwertbarkeit von Ressourcen zu gewährleisten.
[b]Prüfung:[/b]
Während des Kurses werden Sie eine Reihe von Aufgaben lösen, die logisch miteinander verbunden sind. Sie werden an einer von der Lehrkraft vorgeschlagenen Fallstudien arbeiten. Die Fallstudien umfassen eine Reihe von Seiten der textuellen historischen Ressource, die Schritt für Schritt in die Digitale Edition umgewandelt werden müssen. Um den Kurs zu bestehen, müssen Sie die Hausaufgaben erledigen (40% der Note), alle Informationen in einem übersichtlichen Format organisieren und als Poster zusammen mit einer schriftlichen Arbeit (60%) präsentieren.
[b]Erforderliche IT-Kenntnisse für den Kurs:[/b]
Die Kursaufgaben sind auf die unterschiedlichen IT-Kenntnisse der Teilnehmenden abgestimmt. Studierende ohne spezifische Kenntnisse sind ebenfalls willkommen.
Die fertige Digital Edition kann als guter Beitrag zu Ihrem professionellen Portfolio dienen.

Kommentar:
In dieser Ringvorlesung werden ausgewiesene Expert*innen verschiedener Disziplinen kritische Einsichten in medienspezifische, regionale, historische, ästhetische und theoretische Charakteristiken der erzählten Kleidung bzw. Mode vermitteln. Der besondere Reiz der Mode, wie es Andreas Kraß in Geschriebene Kleider (2006) pointiert formuliert, besteht in ihrer Fähigkeit, die reale Welt und das Imaginäre „ineinander zu blenden und dem realen Leben eine mythische Qualität, und zugleich dem imaginierten Leben ein Realitätsprädikat zu verleihen.“ (Ebd. 11) Wie nah auf theoretischer Ebene Texte und Textilien zusammengedacht werden können, zeigt sich exemplarisch an Roland Barthes, der auf die etymologische Wurzel von „Text“ – textum, lateinisch fu¨r Gewebe, Geflecht, Gefu¨ge hinweist (vgl.: Barthes: Système de la Mode von 1967 respektive Die Sprache der Mode von 1985, 80). Gewebemetaphern dienen als Textverfahren häufig dazu, ein nicht-lineares, flexibles und sich räumlich ausbreitendes Erzählen zu umschreiben, bei dem „verschiedene, sich vielfach kreuzende und verzweigende Erzählstränge diverse Ein- und Ausstiegsmöglichkeiten in die Diskurse bereitstellen.“ (Matilda Felix: Nadelstiche. Sticken in der Kunst der Gegenwart, 2010, 182) Text, Textil und Mode gehen insofern Hand-in-Hand. Die wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit und die Ergründung von diesen Interdependenzen stehen im Fokus dieser Ringvorlesung. Im Anschluss an die jeweils ca. 45-minütigen Vorträge haben die Teilnehmenden die Möglichkeit, im Dialog mit den Vortragenden und den Seminarleiterinnen, Verständnisfragen zu klären und auf das Thema bezogene Erwägungen zu erörtern. Vermittelt werden den Teilnehmenden fundierte Kenntnisse der und kritische Einsichten in die Phänomenologie und Analyse des Motivs. Da die Veranstaltung aus Stiftungsmitteln gefördert wird, konnten Vortragende wie Barbara Vinken (München), Andreas Krass (Berlin) und Kiera Vaclavik (London) gewonnen werden.

Digitale Forschungsdaten stehen im Zentrum zahlreicher wissenschaftlicher und gesellschaftlicher Prozesse und Institutionen. Professionelles Forschungsdatenmanagement umfasst daher ein Bündel an inhaltlichen, politischen, organisatorischen, rechtlichen, technologischen und ethischen Aspekten, die die breite Zugänglichkeit zu, aber auch den Schutz von Daten, Forschungsmöglichkeiten, gute wissenschaftliche Praxis, Wissenschaftskommunikation und anderes mehr adressieren. Mit den FAIR- und CARE-Prinzipien liegen griffige Anforderungen zu gutem Forschungsdatenmanagement vor. Im Seminar wollen wir anhand konkreter Beispiele von Forschungsdaten aus dem Bereich des Kulturellen Erbes betrachten, was Forschungsdaten sind und Forschungsdatenmanagement ausmacht und wie die FAIR- und CARE-Prinzipien zum Tragen kommen.

Gutes Forschungsdatenmanagement richtet sein Augenmerk insbesondere auch auf Nachhaltigkeitsaspekte: Die Daten sollen langfristig gesichert und zugreifbar sein. Digitalisierung von Kulturgut ist Teil der Bewahrungsstrategie und Daten des Kulturellen Erbes erfordern daher nachhaltige Pflege über Generationen. Die FAIR- und CARE-Prinzipien adressieren Nachhaltigkeit in vielen Bereichen, nicht zuletzt auch ökologische Nachhaltigkeit (Green IT).

The FAIR and CARE principles provide clear requirements for good research data management. In the seminar, we will use specific examples of research data from the field of cultural heritage to look at what research data is and what constitutes research data management and how the FAIR and CARE principles come into play.
Good research data management also focuses in particular on sustainability aspects: The data should be secured and accessible in the long term. Digitisation of cultural heritage is part of its preservation strategy and cultural heritage data therefore requires sustainable maintenance over generations. The FAIR and CARE principles address sustainability in many areas, not least ecological sustainability (green IT).

Students who have attended the seminar
· are familiar with the notion of systemic resilience and with the causal mechanisms that are, from various social-scientific perspectives, supposed to enhance resilience, such as adaptation, redundance, innovation, and flexibility;
· have an understanding of the ambivalent role that standards can play in resilience enhancing changes;
· are able to analyze empirical cases of institutional change from a perspective of resilience enhancement
· take a critical stance on the merits and perils of standard setting as a governance strategy in crisis management

In the face of multiple contemporary crises – from the ongoing global climate crisis to the recent pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine – organisations in both the public and private sectors are under increased pressure to adapt to external conditions that threaten their existence. The term resilience is used in the social sciences to describe this flexible adaptability of single organisations or whole political and economic systems in dealing with crises-related challenges. Corresponding processes of change rely on the implementation of new standards of governance. This raises the fundamental question whether standards for uncertain, unpredictable futures can be clearly defined and meaningfully established in terms of the flexible adaptability that is required for systemic resilience. Standards of governance therefore play an ambivalent role. For example, sustainability is demanded and disseminated by the European Union as a governance standard to increase the resilience of societies. However, standardisation may propel sclerotic bureaucratisation and thus reduce flexibility as a necessary precondition for resilient adaptation. In the seminar, current debates from governance and resilience research in the social sciences will be explored regarding the role of governance standards in firms, government, and administration in promoting resilience. The overall aim is to conceptually grasp these interrelationships and areas of tension, to shed empirical light on them and to question them normatively.
Zusätzliche Informationen
The seminar is designed as part of the teaching programme of the DFG Research Training Group "Standards of Governance". It is organized jointly by Prof. Dr. Nathalie Behnke (TU Darmstadt) and Prof. Dr. Alexander Ebner (GU Frankfurt). In addition to the members of the Research Training Group, it is also open to a limited number of interested and qualified students from master’s programmes in political science and sociology at both universities. The course language is English. Introductory sessions take place alternatingly at seminar rooms at the Goethe University Frankfurt, the TU Darmstadt; presentations and discussions are combined in a retreat session of one and a half days at the end of the semester (please consider the schedule, as lessons are not organized on a weekly basis!).
The seminar is organized in two parts: In the first part of the course, basic theoretical and empirical perspectives on the topic are conveyed. To this end, various discourse contexts are opened through literature work: Concepts such as resilience, innovation, adaptation; the role of the state in resilience enhancement and the governance instruments available to it for this purpose.
Inthe second part of the course, those conceptual tools will be applied to empirical cases.Participants will work in groups to elaborate empirical examples of the relationship between standard-setting and resilience-building. Cases are selected from various policy and organisational fields. Results of those cases studies are tobe presented and discussed during the retreat session. Finally, the role of standards in increasing overall societal resilience will be critically discussed both from normative and positive perspectives: What is desirable and why – and what exists and what could be practically feasible?
Requirements and grading
Participants are expected to
· regularly attend seminar sessions and actively contribute to them
· prepare reading assignments
· prepare a presentation in a group work and present it to the class
· submit an individual term paper (date of submission: 31.03.2024; length: 5000 words (+/- 10%); the topic is to be selected from among the themes discussed during the seminar. It may be based on the presentation)
